Tracing the Origins of Stingy Jack and His Link to Halloween Customs
In an intriguing tale that spans thousands of years, the Jack O' Lantern finds its roots in an Irish folktale about a cunning trickster named Stingy Jack. This man, known for his clever antics, outwitted the devil several times, earning him a unique fate.
When Jack died, he was barred from entering both heaven and hell. In a twist of fate, the devil agreed to the man's request and tossed him a burning coal to light his way as he wandered the earth alone. Jack, resourceful as ever, placed this coal inside a hollowed-out turnip, creating the first Jack O' Lantern.
