Brooklyn Nets Acquire Forward Haywood Highsmith in Trade Deal

The Brooklyn Nets have made a move to bolster their roster, acquiring forward Haywood Highwood from the Miami Heat in a trade deal. Highsmith, who was traded as part of roster restructuring, is expected to join the Nets after December 15, 2025, when he becomes tradable again.

Highsmith had a successful stint with the Heat, earning $5.2 million last season. According to Basketball Reference, he has appeared in 213 regular-season games (80 starts) and played in 35 playoff games (zero starts) over his four seasons with the team.

Highsmith saw more playing time under head coach Erik Spoelstra, setting career highs in games played (74), starts (42), and minutes per game (24.6). The recovery timeline for Highsmith is 8-10 weeks, following successful surgery to repair a meniscal tear in his right knee, which he sustained during an offseason training session in his hometown of Baltimore.

The Nets were able to absorb Highsmith's salary into their open cap space, allowing the trade to be made without sending salary back to the Heat. Highsmith is set to make approximately $5.61 million in the 2025-26 season.

Meanwhile, Cam Thomas is considering a short-term contract with the Nets for next season before seeking a larger deal as an unrestricted free agent in 2026. Thomas is reportedly showing an increasing interest in playing out next season on a $6 million qualifier to enjoy true free agency next summer.

With the inclusion of Highsmith's contract, the Nets are $22 million below the salary cap. The team has until Oct. 21 to reach 90% of the salary cap.

Before joining the Heat, Highsmith played in 100 G League games and spent the 2020-21 season in the German Basketball Bundesliga. The Nets are optimistic that Highsmith will bring his experience and skills to their team.
