Traditional Classical Music and Klezmer Fusion Performed by Sirba Octet
The Sirba Octet, a unique ensemble from Paris, will be gracing the stage at the grand closing concert of the Jewish Cultural Festival, taking place in Osnabrück from 4th to 7th September 2025. This marks the first time the festival is held in the city.
Known for their distinctive approach, quality, shared playing style, and sound experience, the Sirba Octet plays traditional Jewish folk music known as Klezmer. Their repertoire consists of classically arranged traditional Jewish melodies from Southeast Europe, offering a fascinating insight into Jewish music culture.
The ensemble's violinist, Richard Schmoucler, is the mastermind behind their unique sound. His memories of musical family celebrations and the melodies his mother and grandmother hummed laid the foundation for the Sirba Octet's performances.
The name Sirba Octet refers to the historically close connection between Jewish and Roma musicians. The Sirba dance, a 2/4 time dance popular in regions of Romania, Moldova, Poland, and Hungary, is often accompanied by Klezmer melodies. This dance was known and popular among Eastern European Jews and Roma alike.
The Jewish Cultural Festival will offer a variety of cultural experiences, including music, literature, film, and opportunities for interaction. Alongside the Sirba Octet's performance, the festival will feature readings at the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus, film screenings at the Cinema Artehouse, concerts at the OsnabrückHalle, and encounters at various other locations.
Intendant Avi Toubiana expressed enthusiasm about securing the Sirba Octet for Osnabrück, stating that their performance is highly anticipated. The group's performances are widely acclaimed around the globe, making their appearance at the Jewish Cultural Festival a significant event.
