Tragedy on a public platform: A 16-year-old meets an unfortunate demise
In the small town of Geisleden, Thuringia, a tragic event occurred on August 11, 2022, at Friedland station. A 16-year-old girl, identified as Liana K, lost her life under heart-wrenching circumstances.
Initially, the police believed it was an accident. However, the family, who had recently fled from Ukraine and resided in Geisleden from August to November 2022, held suspicions that it was not an accidental death.
The suspect in this case is Muhammad A, a 31-year-old Iraqi man. He is currently under psychiatric detention on suspicion of manslaughter. DNA traces of the suspect were found on Liana's shoulder, leading to his identification as the primary suspect. It was later revealed that Muhammad had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was under psychiatric treatment shortly before the incident.
Liana was a daily commuter to her training place in Friedland, a town located in Lower Saxony near the state borders with Hesse and Thuringia. The exact circumstances leading to her death remain unclear, but it is now suspected to be a homicide.
Flowers and candles have been left at the station in Friedland in memory of Liana. The response to the fundraising appeals for the family's funeral costs was overwhelming, with many donations made online and in person at the town hall in Geisleden. Around 14,000 euros have been collected so far.
Mayor Markus Janitzki of Geisleden spoke about Liana's caution, emphasising her careful nature and the shock that the community felt upon learning of her death. Liana's family later moved from Geisleden to the nearby spa town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt.
