Tragedy strikes as the family of a Siemens executive perishes in a helicopter accident in the heart of New York.
In a tragic turn of events, a helicopter crash occurred in New York City's Hudson River near Manhattan, claiming the lives of six individuals, including three children and three adults.
The helicopter involved in the accident was a Bell 206. The incident occurred as the helicopter turned around as it approached the northern end of Manhattan, with the pilot apparently losing control of the aircraft. An eyewitness reported that the helicopter's rotor blade detached before the crash.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported the crash, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the cause of the accident. The FAA has also permanently restricted helicopter traffic near Reagan National Airport and is reviewing helicopter operations near other major airports following a similar collision in Washington D.C.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in New York. In May 2019, a runaway helicopter crashed into the Hudson River, and another helicopter crashed onto a skyscraper roof. The collision between an American Airlines jet and an army helicopter near Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C. in 2009 resulted in the deaths of 67 people, leading to discussions about helicopter safety in the U.S. Congress.
Helicopter sightseeing flights are a popular tourist attraction in New York, costing hundreds of dollars per flight. However, many residents find helicopters disturbing, especially in the densely populated city. In 2016, New York attempted to limit the number of helicopter flights to 30,000 per year.
The president and CEO of Siemens in Spain, connected to the victims of the helicopter crash in the Hudson River, is AgustΓn Escobar, who has held the position since 2022. Divers helped retrieve victims from the water, four of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other victims were taken to nearby hospitals, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The "Miracle on the Hudson" occurred in 2009, where a US Airways plane successfully landed on the Hudson River with no injuries. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the contrast between life and death in the skies above New York City.
As the investigation continues, the city and its residents await answers and hope for improvements in helicopter safety measures.
