In the heart of New York, on a bustling intersection in Washington Heights, a vibrant and tight-knit community comes to life in the dream musical "In the Heights". The film adaptation, directed by Jon M. Chu, is a love letter to the neighbourhood, penned by its creator and original star, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The story weaves together an ensemble of characters during one particular summer of seismic change in all of their lives. At the centre is Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), a likeable and magnetic bodega owner. The film pays tribute to the impact queer individuals have had on communities like Washington Heights, as Quiara Alegría Hudes, the playwright and co-creator of the original musical, decided to have a traditional married couple, Daniela and Carla, who own the salon together.

Quiara Alegría Hudes, who also wrote the book for the original musical, grew up in Philadelphia and has a personal connection to the story as a first-generation American. Her collaboration with Miranda later earned them both Tony Awards, numerous world tours, and legions of fans.

The filmmakers were determined to assemble the right ensemble and cast performers based on authenticity in the part, regardless of name recognition. Casting sessions were held in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington Heights, and the local residents' reactions proved inspiring. The film stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Gregory Diaz IV, Stephanie Beatriz, Dascha Polanco, and Jimmy Smits.

Principal photography for the film adaptation took place on location in the titular neighbourhood. Some characters' stories are enlarged and given more resonance for an audience in 2021, such as Nina's reticence to return to Stanford and Sonny's immigration issues.

The Original Cast Recording of "In the Heights" won a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The production earned 13 Tony nominations, winning four, including Best Musical.

The film version of "In the Heights", which was originally scheduled for release in summer 2020, was delayed to summer 2021. Lin-Manuel Miranda started writing "In the Heights" when he was 19-years-old, and the film adaptation is a testament to the impact the musical has had on audiences over the years.
