The world of Mortal Kombat is set to return to the big screen with the new action adventure film, directed by Simon McQuoid. This highly-anticipated production has been in the making for quite some time, as James Wan, producer of the film, explains that it has been over 25 years since the first feature film came out, and fans have been eagerly asking for another big screen entry.

McQuoid, who has a strong vision for the world and characters from the original material, states that the goal in bringing the story to the screen was to respect the material, service the fans, and create a thrilling experience for moviegoers. Wan and McQuoid aimed to bring these vivid characters and stories back to the big screen in a modern, exciting way for a new generation.

The film, based on the blockbuster video game franchise, features intense action and brutal glory, with numerous canon favorites like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, as well as the extensive lore, iconic costumes, catchphrases, signature moves, and fatalities. Characters in the film, such as Kano, Sub-Zero, Jax, Sonya, and Cole, are portrayed as humorous, ruthless, magnificent, powerful, and a guide to the universe, respectively.

A new character in the film is Cole Young, an MMA fighter who learns of his destiny to join a team of chosen warriors. Oren Uziel and Greg Russo developed the story for the film, with Russo and Dave Callaham scripting it. Russo, a longtime fan of Mortal Kombat, drew inspiration for Cole's storyline from his own life and fears about being a father.

Filming for Mortal Kombat took place in and around Adelaide, South Australia. McQuoid assembled a talented team of creatives for filming, including director of photography Germain McMicking, production designer Naaman Marshall, and costume designer Cappi Ireland.

In the film, the fate of Earth is in the hands of these warriors as they face a decisive battle against enemies from Outworld. Wan and McQuoid discussed a fresh take on Mortal Kombat, aiming to respect its history and attract new fans. McQuoid hopes audiences will enjoy the film's brutal action, intense fights, and Easter eggs for hardcore superfans.

As for the future of the Mortal Kombat franchise, Jeremy Slater is confirmed as the screenwriter for the sequel "Mortal Kombat 2". The fate of the Mortal Kombat universe remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the world of Mortal Kombat is back, and it's more exciting than ever.
