Transport agency TfGM set to receive £30 million in investment for enhanced transportation services

Greater Manchester is set to receive more than £30 million in funding as part of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement. This investment aims to improve public transport and active travel within the region, making it safer, cleaner, and more accessible.

The funding will support a variety of projects, including a £700,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging pilot that will trial flush-fitting and pedestal EV chargers in residential areas. Additionally, £400,000 will be allocated to the Travel Hubs Access Programme, aiming to improve walking and cycling access to Metrolink, bus, and rail stops.

Several rail stations will also benefit from the investment. Swinton, Reddish North, Hindley, and Bryn stations will receive £16.68m to become step-free, enhancing accessibility for all passengers. The A6 will see £2.24m spent on new toucan crossings, 20mph zones, and better walking and cycling routes, while the A56/Barrington road and A56/Sinderland road will receive £2.2m for new pedestrian crossings and traffic signal improvements.

A significant portion of the funding, £2.5m, will be used for a new cyclops junction and segregated cycle lanes on the Topp Way/Higher Bridge route. Moreover, 220 bus stops will be enhanced with new shelters, raised kerbs, better road markings, and improved walking routes, at a cost of £4.5m.

Passenger information displays at 319 bus stops and five transport interchanges will also be improved with £2.7m. Chris Barnes, Network Director for Infrastructure at TfGM, stated that the Bee Network is transforming travel in Greater Manchester, providing reliable, accessible, safe, affordable, and sustainable travel options.

The announcement also marks the upcoming fourth annual CiTTi Awards, to be held on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. This event recognises achievements in sustainable transport planning.

However, the article does not provide information about the current state of Manchester's air quality, nor does it mention any specific improvements to active travel for cyclists or pedestrians, other than the projects listed. Furthermore, details about the state of the transport infrastructure improvements mentioned earlier, such as the status of the new pedestrian crossings, traffic signal improvements, or the cycling junction and segregated cycle lanes, are not provided.
