Travel report on bath active trips details steps forward for BWWCL

The Bath Walking, Wheeling, and Cycling Links (BWWCL) scheme, which went out to public consultation last year, is set to deliver multiple active travel improvements around the city. The project, which concluded its public consultation earlier this year, will be delivered in phases, with the first phase scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024.

Lucy Hodge, Bath & North East Somerset Council cabinet member for sustainable transport delivery, has expressed excitement about delivering two schemes that will improve walking, wheeling, and cycling around the city. One of the key features of the BWWCL scheme is a high-quality segregated cycle path within Royal Victoria Park, creating a safe environment for less confident cyclists of all ages and abilities. This new cycle path aims to benefit children and young people learning to cycle and those cycling to school or wheeling to the play area and skate park.

The BWWCL project includes proposals for 6.2km of new cycling routes across the city. Infrastructure improvements will connect the Kennet & Avon Canal tow path to the city centre, including new shared crossings. The Oldfield School to Newbridge Hill and Links to Royal United Hospital routes will undergo further design work and community engagement.

It's important to note that the BWWCL project is not related to the UK DfT's pledge to create a 3,500-mile national active travel network. The first phase of the BWWCL project will focus on the delivery of the City Centre to Kennet & Avon Canal and Weston to City Centre routes.

For those interested in the advancements in active travel, the fourth annual CiTTi Awards will recognize achievements and innovations in this sector. The event, unmissable for the UK's transportation sector, will take place on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
