Truck Obstruction on Eselswiese Bridge Crossing over the Lahn River - New Development
The Eselsbrücke bridge, a vital infrastructure in the region, is set to undergo a significant reinforcement project. This project, slated to begin before Christmas 2024, aims to counteract the bulging of the steel main girders using a technique called bulge reinforcement.
The work, awarded to the company Strabag AG, is expected to continue until winter 2025/2026. During the initial phase, which begins on June 23rd, the project will focus on the bridge's underside, with no immediate changes to the traffic situation on the B 429.
Upon successful completion of the maintenance measures, vehicles up to 44 tons in weight will be able to cross the Eselsbrücke bridge again. This improvement will significantly enhance the traffic situation for heavy vehicles in the region, a key objective of the structural maintenance.
Following the completion of this work, the bridge caps in the direction of the Lahnfeld intersection will be demolished and replaced with lightweight concrete. This material, although lighter, maintains the same function as regular concrete. The same process will be applied to the bridge caps on the east side of the structure.
After the completion of the road resurfacing on the B 429 between the Lahnfeld intersection and the Wettenberg junction in late summer 2025, a construction phase will begin to install the new bridge caps on the half of the bridge towards B 49. During this phase, a detour via the surrounding paths and the state road 3359 (Lahnparkstraße) will be signposted in both directions.
Two lanes in each direction and an overtaking ban for trucks will be available on the Eselsbrücke bridge after the reinforcement. The section of the cycle and pedestrian path on the bridge will be closed during this phase.
The weight restriction on the Eselsbrücke bridge on the B 429 federal highway, currently at a maximum of 3.5 tons, is expected to be lifted in the medium term. This lift is eagerly anticipated, as it will allow vehicles of a greater weight to cross the bridge once more.
The goal of the structural maintenance is to ensure the long-term preservation of the bridge, a crucial piece of infrastructure in the region. The Eselsbrücke bridge has been closed to traffic heavier than 3.5 tons in both directions since April 2023.
Upon completion of the construction work, the bridge caps will be renewed with lightweight concrete, which has a lower weight but maintains the same function as regular concrete. This upgrade is part of a larger plan to improve the Eselsbrücke bridge and the traffic situation for heavy vehicles in the region.
