In the heart of Eastern Europe, a country twice the size of Germany but with fewer inhabitants finds itself at the centre of geopolitical tensions. Ukraine, the capital of which is Kyiv, has been seeking membership in NATO, a defensive alliance of many Western countries, including Germany, France, Great Britain, and the USA.

However, Russia, which borders Ukraine, has been a vocal opponent of Ukraine's desire to join the alliance. This opposition came to a head in 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale attack against Ukraine, resulting in an ongoing war within the country.

Recently, at a NATO meeting, the NATO Secretary General, Marc Rutte, expressed concern over the lack of transparency in negotiations between President Trump and President Putin. Rutte stated that neither Trump nor Putin had informed the European countries about the negotiations, a move that has raised eyebrows among European politicians.

Ukraine's current predicament in the negotiations has not gone unnoticed. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has advocated for Ukraine and Europe to be involved in the talks between Putin and Trump. German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, has also shown support for Ukraine's involvement, emphasising the need for a more inclusive approach to resolving the conflict.

Despite these calls for inclusion, Ukraine has not been taken seriously as a state in these negotiations. This is particularly concerning given Russia's long-standing ambition to annex parts of Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula and the east of Ukraine, since 2014.

The peace agreement in question is being dictated, not co-decided by Ukraine, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by the European community. The ongoing conflict has raised questions about the future of Ukraine and its relationship with NATO, as well as the role Europe should play in mediating the crisis.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to unfold, it is clear that the country's NATO aspirations are more important than ever. If a member country is attacked, other member countries of NATO provide assistance, such as sending soldiers. With Russia's aggressive actions towards Ukraine, the importance of NATO's role in protecting its member countries has never been more apparent.

In the face of adversity, Ukraine's desire to join NATO serves as a beacon of hope for a more secure and stable future. As the European community continues to navigate the complexities of the ongoing conflict, it is crucial that Ukraine's voice is heard and its sovereignty is respected.
