"Trump expresses continued friendship towards Modi, but highlights sporadic interactions between the two on specific occasions"
In a series of statements and posts on Truth Social, former US President Donald Trump has expressed his displeasure over India's recent oil purchases from Russia. This comes amidst a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States a couple of months prior.
Trump stated that he has been very disappointed with India's buying of oil from Russia, a move that he believes funds Russia's war machine and increases costs for US taxpayers. This sentiment was shared by Kevin Hassett, the National Economic Council Director, who also expressed disappointment over India's continued funding of Russia's war in Ukraine.
Despite these current disappointments, Trump reiterated his continued friendship towards Modi. He stated that there's nothing to worry about regarding the current tensions between India and the United States.
Trump's trade talks with India are going well, according to his statement. However, he mentioned the potential imposition of a 50% tariff on India, citing India's high tariffs as a reason for costing US jobs, a claim supported by Peter Navarro, a senior counselor for trade and manufacturing in the Trump administration.
Trump's criticism of India's oil purchases from Russia is part of a broader criticism of several countries, including some in Europe, for potentially moving too close to China. Trump's stance, rooted in his "America First" policy, opposes increased alignment with China, particularly due to trade disputes.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump shared an old photo of Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, suggesting a perceived alignment between India, Russia, and China.
The Trump administration, however, maintains that India and the United States have a "special relationship." Hassett expressed hope for a positive resolution to this diplomatic issue soon, emphasising the importance of maintaining friendly relations between the two nations.
