Trump is unlikely to prioritize Ukraine or Europe over his personal interests
In a series of high-profile meetings, US President Donald Trump has engaged with Russian President Vladimir Putin, raising concerns about the future of Ukraine and the motivations behind Trump's diplomatic moves.
Trump's actions, while often playing to his political base, do not constitute a coherent worldview beyond paranoia and a desire to rule. His primary motivation appears to be self-aggrandizement and self-preservation.
Recently, Trump and Putin met alone in the back of Trump's armored limousine, known as "the Beast," during their meeting in Alaska. This private conversation, without interpreters or other aides, has sparked controversy, as there is no public record of what they discussed.
During this meeting, Trump went into the discussion claiming he would seek a ceasefire before negotiations to end the war in Ukraine could begin. However, he left the meeting stating that Ukraine and Russia should seek a peace deal, a position that could potentially result in Ukraine having to cede important swaths of its territory to Russia.
Trump's track record as a businessman and president has been littered with deals gone awry, and his diplomatic meetings with Putin are not driven by lofty political and economic theory, but by personal interest and potential business deals.
The Europeans understand that strong-arming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy into concessions might only postpone further conflicts, not end them. In a recent meeting at the White House, several European leaders joined Zelenskiy to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Putin has reportedly offered a written promise not to attack Ukraine again, but the reliability of this promise is uncertain. The US businessman Donald Trump, during his presidency, tried to pursue business deals with figures in Russia, including Felix Sater.
Trump's immigration policies involve rounding up and deporting immigrants, stripping them of civil rights, and sending in law enforcement agencies like the US National Guard and FBI. His responses to problems often overshoot the dimensions of the problems, and are driven by his desire to rule and live large.
In a departure from traditional economic policies, Trump has shown interest in state capitalism. This is evidenced by his desire to use tax dollars to buy a federal stake in Intel Corp and demands for kickbacks from Nvidia Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
The meeting between Trump and Putin lasted about 10 minutes before they entered a conference room for their formal meeting. As the future of Ukraine hangs in the balance, the world watches with bated breath, awaiting the next move in this complex geopolitical chess game.
