Trump's former Miss Universe pageant winner, Alicia Machado, attributes verbal attacks from Trump to her struggle with an eating disorder.
During the Miss Universe pageant of 1996, Alicia Machado, a Venezuelan native, was crowned the winner. However, her victory was overshadowed by the derogatory names and comments made by the pageant's owner, Donald Trump.
At just 18 years old, Machado was called "Miss Piggy", "Miss Housekeeping", and "Miss Eating Machine" by Trump. These routine insults, according to Machado, affected her self-esteem and contributed to an eating disorder she struggled with for years.
In a recent interview with TODAY's Natalie Morales, Machado spoke about her experiences with Trump. She recalled being filmed by Trump-ordered camera crews while exercising, a humiliating ordeal that added to her distress.
Fast forward to the 2016 presidential campaign, and Machado's story has once again come to light. During the first presidential debate, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton used Machado's story as evidence of Trump's misogynistic treatment of women. Trump, in response, criticised Machado, calling her "the worst we ever had" and "impossible."
Machado has since expressed her support for Clinton and hopes her story will help solidify support for the Democratic nominee. In a recent ad for Clinton, Machado described Trump as someone who "bears many grudges and harbors a deep racism."
Trump's comments about Machado's weight gain were also brought up during a 1997 interview on Howard Stern's radio show, where Trump stated that Machado gained about 55 pounds within a 9-month period.
As the presidential campaign continues, Machado's story remains a topic of discussion, shedding light on Trump's past behaviour towards women and the impact it can have. Machado's experiences serve as a reminder of the importance of standing up against bullying and supporting those who have been wronged.
