Two Turkish police officers are reportedly killed, with a teen suspect in custody.
In the heart of Izmir, a tragic incident unfolded at a police station in Balcova, west of the resort city. A 16-year-old named E.B. is under arrest following the attack, which claimed the lives of two officers and left a third seriously injured.
The attack took place at the police station, where the suspect, armed with a pump-action shotgun loaded with golf ammunition, reportedly entered the building. The weapon used was either a long-barrelled gun or a pump-action shotgun, as per the initial reports.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc swiftly opened an investigation, involving an eight-strong team of prosecutors. The investigation was launched on platform X. The specific details of the suspect's treatment by paramedics are not provided, but it is known that the alleged attacker appeared to be conscious, with the back of his trousers covered in blood.
Prior to the authorities' imposition of a ban on the dissemination of images related to the attack, footage circulated online showing a person in a balaclava, a black top, and pale trousers carrying a rifle and entering a building. Another clip showed the alleged attacker lying on the pavement being treated by paramedics, while a third clip depicted a group of civilians helping to manhandle the suspect into a police van.
Authorities have imposed tight security measures in the area, with police fanning out across the region following the incident. It is unclear at this time why the police station was targeted. The suspect's father reportedly bought the shotgun 10 years ago, but there is no publicly available information about his involvement in the incident.
Many ministers have denounced the attack and sent condolences to the families of the victims. As the investigation continues, the community in Izmir stands united in mourning the loss of their brave officers.
