Heavy Rains and Typhoon Peipah Disrupt Services and Cause Damage in Shizuoka

Heavy rains and the passage of Typhoon Peipah have caused disruptions and damage in the central prefecture of Shizuoka, Japan. The high-speed train services on the Tokaido Shinkansen line were suspended for hours in some sections due to the heavy downpour.

Reports indicate that hourly rainfalls of 110-120 millimeters were recorded at multiple locations in Shizuoka, leading to the formation of linear precipitation zones in the prefecture and neighbouring Kanagawa. The typhoon, which moved eastward along Japan's Pacific coast on Friday, turned into an extratropical depression at night.

The city of Makinohara in Shizuoka Prefecture was particularly affected by the storm. Six houses were completely destroyed, and thirty-four houses were partially damaged due to the heavy winds and rain. Utility poles collapsed, and a large truck overturned in the city.

Twenty-three individuals were reported injured in Makinohara, and an emergency call was made regarding a man in his 80s who may have fallen in a waterway in Hamamatsu, another city in Shizuoka. However, no further information about the man's condition has been provided.

Authorities suspect that a tornado may have caused the storm damage in Makinohara. The linear precipitation zones that formed continue to affect the area, and the disruptions to the high-speed train services persist.

As the storm continues to move eastward, residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors and follow the instructions of local authorities. Emergency services are working to assist those affected by the storm and to ensure the safety of the public.
