U.S. approves $825 million worth of weapon sales to Ukraine
US Announces $825 Million Arms Sale to Ukraine
The United States has announced a planned arms sale to Ukraine worth $825 million, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). The sale includes 3350 air-launched missiles of the Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) type, aimed at further equipping Ukraine for self-defense and regional security operations.
The DSCA made the announcement on Thursday, stating that the sale is expected to support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States. The funds for the purchase will come from Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway.
The sale is justified as a means to improve Ukraine's ability to meet current and future threats. European countries are to foot the bill for the military aid to Ukraine, with the transaction requiring approval from the US Congress. The State Department has approved the potential sale.
Under former President Joe Biden, Washington had committed to providing military aid to Ukraine totaling more than $65 billion. The countries apparently involved in financing the military aid for Ukraine amount to over 825 million US dollars, approved by the USA, include primarily the United States itself as the largest contributor, followed by Germany as the second-largest, and other Western countries such as the United Kingdom and EU institutions; in total, 31 Western countries have pledged various military, financial, and humanitarian support to Ukraine since the conflict began.
The missile sale comes amidst ongoing tensions with Russia, with Ukraine continuing to face threats to its security. The sale also includes a US credit guarantee, as previously stated. Notably, the sale contrasts with the stance of former President Donald Trump, who had long refused to supply weapons to Ukraine.
The sale is aimed at improving the security of a partner country that is a driving force for political stability and economic progress in Europe. The missiles and equipment are of the ERAM type, a move that is expected to significantly boost Ukraine's military capabilities. The sale is intended to be a part of the ongoing efforts to support Ukraine's self-defense and regional security operations.
