U.S. authorities launch an offensive targeting immigrants in Chicago city.
In a surprising turn of events, the acting director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, Todd Lyons, announced "Operation Midway Blitz" in Chicago. This operation, however, has sparked controversy due to the cryptic nature of its intentions.
The city of Chicago, known for its Democratic leadership, has rejected a militarised approach without due process. Chicago's Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois' Democratic Governor JB Pritzker have expressed their concerns, with Pritzker accusing President Donald Trump of sowing fear among Illinois residents.
Trump's post, which was aimed at the Democratic stronghold of Chicago, shared an AI-generated graphic of Chicago's skyline, resembling "Apocalypse Now." The post was a reference to the famous film quote, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning," but Trump replaced "napalm" with "deportations." This phrase, along with the lack of specific information about the operation, has raised alarm among local authorities and residents.
The post did not mention any collaboration or consultation with local authorities in Chicago. In the past, ICE raids in the city have resulted in the detention and deportation of U.S. citizens, leading to allegations of human rights violations.
Governor Pritzker prefers collaboration on public safety instead of the operation. He stated that the federal government did not inform him about enhanced migration measures, unlike Chicago's Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson, who was also left in the dark.
The caption on Trump's post referred to the Department of Defense being renamed the Department of War, fuelling speculation about a possible military intervention in Chicago. However, Trump did not specify whether the operation he was hinting at was Operation Midway Blitz.
The operation is said to target "criminal illegal aliens," but the lack of transparency has led to a wave of uncertainty and concern among Chicago's residents. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this operation will impact the city and its people.
