U.S. Bank requires employees to work from the office for three days a week
In a move to promote a more traditional work environment and enhance collaboration, two of the world's largest banks - Deutsche Bank and U.S. Bank - have announced new office attendance policies.
U.S. Bank, in an internal memo, has mandated that employees come into the office at least three days a week. This shift from optional office hours, first mentioned by CEO Andy Cecere in November 2022, aims to bring consistency, promote the bank's culture, and ensure a productive and supportive work environment. Jeff Shelman, a U.S. Bank spokesperson, stated that the bank aims to find a balance between providing flexibility and enhancing collaboration and relationships.
U.S. Bank will designate 24 markets as hubs, with employees within 30 miles of these hub cities required to come to the office. The bank also intends to invest in offices and make upgrades in the designated hubs. However, the precise list of these 24 cities or markets has not been disclosed.
Deutsche Bank, on the other hand, requires managers to come into the office four days a week, while all other staff must come in at least three days. Notably, Deutsche Bank prohibits employees from working a remote Monday following a remote Friday.
These new policies come as Deutsche Bank's leadership has been trying to increase office attendance since the COVID-19 pandemic ended. Similarly, Bank of America has been sending "letters of education" to employees who are not meeting the bank's office attendance policy since last fall. A letter from Bank of America states that failure to adhere to the workplace expectations within two weeks may result in further disciplinary action.
In January, a Bank of America employee posted a letter online, which was a notification of potential disciplinary action due to attendance issues. Elcio Barcelos and Mark Runkel, the bank's human resources chief and transformation chief, respectively, announced the new policy in a memo.
However, the response or reactions to these new policies from employees or external sources like news outlets have not been reported. It remains to be seen how these stricter office attendance policies will impact the workforce and the banks' overall productivity.
The new policies from Deutsche Bank and Bank of America aim to increase office attendance and promote a more traditional work environment. As the world continues to navigate the post-pandemic landscape, it seems that these banks are taking steps to return to a more conventional office setting.
