U.S. Open welcomes Trump: Stricter security measures planned

The 2021 US Open tennis championship, held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, saw an increase in security measures due to the announced visit of then-US President Donald Trump.

On the final day of the Grand Slam tournament, visitors and media representatives were subjected to significantly more thorough checks. The Arthur Ashe Stadium, which can accommodate nearly 24,000 spectators, underwent additional security checks. Bags were searched more thoroughly and carefully than before, and media representatives were checked by security personnel.

A contingent of the Secret Service has been deployed around the tennis center, with the agency playing a key role in the enhanced security measures. The Club World Cup final in football near New York, which Trump also attended, and other high-profile sporting events have seen similar security measures since his election victory last November.

The men's final, scheduled to begin at 20:30 CEST (14:30 local time), was moved back by half an hour due to the increased security measures. The highly-anticipated match between Italian Jannik Sinner and Spanish Carlos Alcaraz was not affected by the delay, providing spectators with ample time to take their seats.

The US Open, one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, has been held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center since 1978. This year's tournament marked the first time that such extensive security measures were implemented, underscoring the importance of the event and the presence of a high-profile attendee.
