UAE Unveils Fifth Examination on Safety Measures for Nuclear Debris

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) presented its Fifth National Report on compliance with the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and Radioactive Waste Management at the 8th Review Meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria. The UAE's Permanent Representative to the IAEA, Hamad Al Kaabi, led the delegation that included representatives from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC), and other national stakeholders.

The report highlights the UAE's commitment to nuclear safety, regulatory advancements, and waste management strategies in line with international best practices. Ambassador Al Kaabi stated that the report outlines key legislative and regulatory measures, including FANR-issued regulations on radiation protection, facility decommissioning, and waste disposal.

One of the key aspects of the UAE's nuclear sector is the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, operated by ENEC. This plant features a spent fuel storage system capable of holding fuel for 20 years before transitioning to dry storage. The report details this plant, emphasising its safety features and capacity.

The UAE's efforts in the nuclear sector also include the development of an Emirati workforce. An impressive 76% of FANR's workforce are Emiratis, with 45% of them being women. Furthermore, 58% of FANR's leadership roles are held by Emiratis, including women, demonstrating the country's commitment to fostering a diverse and locally skilled workforce.

In addition to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the UAE has over 4,000 licensees following FANR guidelines for the storage and transport of radioactive materials from medical and industrial sectors. This widespread adherence to FANR's regulations underscores the country's commitment to nuclear safety.

The UAE's nuclear ambitions extend beyond its borders, as it continues to uphold its commitment to global collaboration. In 2023, FANR approved a site selection license for a low-level radioactive waste management facility. The location approved for this facility is the ENEC site at Barakah, UAE, further solidifying the UAE's position as a leader in nuclear safety and waste management.
