Uber critiques transfer market: "It's absolutely ridiculous"
Uli Hoeneß, the honorary president of Bayern Munich and a 1974 World Cup winner, has expressed his shock over recent developments in the international transfer market. In a statement, Hoeness described the high transfer fees in the summer window as "utterly crazy," and warned that the current trend "can't end well."
The English Premier League clubs have set a new record by spending over 3.5 billion euros on new signings, with players such as Florian Wirtz joining FC Liverpool and Nick Woltemade now playing for Newcastle United. However, Bayern Munich failed to sign both national team players due to the financial power of English Premier League clubs.
Hoeneß's comments about the transfer market refer to wealthy Middle Eastern investors and American financial firms heavily investing in football clubs and influencing player transfers. He has urged the Bundesliga to forge its own path and take a leadership role, and has demanded that Bundesliga clubs should never have to take money from these sources.
Hoeneß has also questioned if the public wouldn't eventually ask if the high spending is "completely mad." He advises the Bundesliga to show strength and not accept money from Arab or American hedge funds. The DFL, not Hoeneß, is responsible for ensuring that Bundesliga clubs "never have to take this money."
Despite the challenges in the transfer market, Hoeneß remains optimistic about the coming Champions League season. He declared Bayern Munich, the record champions from Munich, as underdogs for the upcoming European Cup season. Hoeneß expressed excitement for the coming season, likening Bayern Munich to Hoffenheim, with low expectations.
Hoeneß was honored by the DFL for his services to German professional football, and his statement about Bayern Munich being underdogs in the European Cup season is not related to their failure to sign Florian Wirtz and Nick Woltemade.
