Ukraine pressing for stronger assurances from the U.S. and Europe amid Russia's massive missile attack
In a series of high-level discussions, Ukrainian Presidential Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security advisors from the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and France. The talks, held in New York during the UN General Assembly high-level week starting on 22 September 2025, focused on defense aid, security guarantees, and stronger sanctions against Russia.
Yermak emphasised the need for additional support for Ukraine, particularly air defense, and strengthening sanctions against Russia due to intensified missile and drone attacks by Moscow. He briefed Rubio on constant strikes by Russia, who are attacking Ukrainian cities and residential buildings.
In a separate development, Ukraine's air force reported intercepting 747 out of 810 drones and four out of 13 missiles launched in separate strikes. This comes as Russia launched its largest aerial assault on Ukraine since the invasion began. The first reported damage to Kyiv's government building since the war began was also reported.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled potential new sanctions on Russia, expressing frustration with the ongoing war and stating that he is "not happy with anything" related to the conflict. Trump also hinted at possible action involving Venezuela.
Trump's stance towards Russian President Vladimir Putin has been firm, with the American leader believing he is the toughest leader on Putin. Yermak believes that Putin understands only force and does not want to stop the war, so pressure on Russia must continue. Yermak praised Rubio for doing a lot to achieve a just peace.
The talks followed a Sept. 4 meeting of the "coalition of the willing" in Paris, where coordination of "a clear system of security guarantees for Ukraine" was discussed. European leaders are expected to visit Washington this week for further discussions on the Ukraine conflict.
Trump pointed to "very interesting talks" underway on possible peace agreements, with Yermak discussing with partners "the next practical steps and measures" in providing additional support and strengthening sanctions against Russia. A stable peace, Yermak stated, is the goal that must be achieved.
In these challenging times, the international community continues to stand with Ukraine in its quest for peace and security.
