In Ludwigshafen, Rhineland-Palatinate, a 16-year-old driver was stopped for a traffic control on September 5, 2025, while riding an e-scooter in Rheinstraße. The incident, originally reported by the Police Directorate Ludwigshafen via news aktuell, has led to serious consequences.

The 16-year-old showed signs of alcohol consumption, and a breath test revealed a reading of 1.5 per mil. A blood sample was taken at the local station for further analysis. The young driver is now facing charges of driving under the influence and violating the compulsory insurance law.

The 15-year-old passenger, meanwhile, received a notice of violation for riding on an e-scooter, which is only permitted for one person.

The e-scooter owner, it appears, is also in trouble. A criminal complaint has been filed against them for allowing uninsured driving. This case underscores the importance of e-scooter rental companies ensuring their riders are insured, as e-scooters are considered motor vehicles, and offenses related to driving under the influence are treated similarly to cars.

A report will be made to the relevant authorities regarding both the 16-year-old driver and the e-scooter owner. The public is reminded to always prioritise safety and responsibility when using e-scooters and other motor vehicles.
