The sky will be ablaze with a celestial spectacle on Sunday, September 7, 2025, as the September full moon, also known as the corn moon, transforms into a blood moon during a total lunar eclipse. The lunar eclipse will begin at around 15:28 UTC, or 11:28 a.m. ET (8:28 a.m. PT), and will reach its peak at around 2:09 p.m. ET. The total lunar eclipse will last roughly two hours, with the moon appearing redder than usual during this period.
Europe will have the best views of this blood moon, particularly in parts of Germany and Portugal where the eclipse coincides with nighttime. However, the moon will often be low on the horizon and partially eclipsed at moonrise, which may limit observation quality, especially in northern and central Europe. Southern Europe, including Portugal, offers better visibility with more of the total eclipse observable.
Most of the rest of Europe and Africa will see a partial eclipse. Asia, Australia, Eastern Europe, and Eastern Africa will have the primary view of the total lunar eclipse. Unfortunately, North and South America will miss out on this cosmic event.
The Earth and moon's stable orbits make lunar eclipses entirely predictable, and the next five total lunar eclipses will occur in New Year's Eve in 2028, June 2029, December 2029, and two more in 2032. The next total lunar eclipse visible in the US will be in 2029.
