Uncommon tree blooms in Latvia's Botanical Sanctuary
The Latvian National Botanical Garden is gearing up for a special event on 21 June, as they celebrate the summer solstice and Birch Day with a traditional plant market. Among the various attractions, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the Snowflake tree, a unique specimen that has become a highlight of the garden.
Located in the central part of the garden, to the right of the entrance to the Tourist Information Centre, just behind the new iris beds, the Snowflake tree stands approximately three metres tall. However, it has the potential to grow up to 10 metres, showcasing its impressive stature when in full bloom.
The Snowflake tree, native to North America and China, is under the care of gardener Natalya Medne. Its seeds, the size of cherry pits, are surrounded by dark blue flesh, adding to the tree's distinctive characteristics. The tree's decorative seeds and leaves, leathery and unusually large, ranging from 8 to 20 centimetres long, contribute to its allure.
When in full bloom, the tree appears as if it is covered with fine white snowflakes, earning its Latvian name, 'snowflake' tree. The petals of the tree are very narrow and long, adding to the delicate, ethereal appearance of the tree.
In addition to the Snowflake tree, the Botanical Garden is currently ablaze with colour as irises, tree peonies, rhododendrons, lilacs, weigelas, spireas, and blood-red horse chestnuts are still in full bloom. The leaves of the Snowflake tree will turn yellow in autumn, providing a beautiful contrast to the vibrant autumn hues throughout the garden.
The Latvian National Botanical Garden is also hosting educational activities to discover the diversity of birch trees. Visitors are encouraged to learn more about these versatile trees and their importance in Latvian culture and ecosystems.
So, mark your calendars for 21 June and join the celebration at the Latvian National Botanical Garden. It promises to be a day filled with learning, beauty, and the spirit of tradition.
