In the ongoing EuroBasket tournament, world champion basketball player Dennis Schröder and his wife, Ellen, have been at the centre of a disturbing incident involving racist abuse.

During the game between Schröder's team and Lithuania, which ended in a score of 107:88 in favour of Schröder's team, some Lithuanian fans were heard making monkey noises at halftime. This behaviour, which is unacceptable in any context, has led to one spectator being banned from all further games by the international basketball federation (FIBA).

Following the incident, Ellen Schröder took to Instagram to condemn the racist comments and abuse directed at her husband. She expressed her disappointment and called upon the culprits to be ashamed of their actions. She also emphasised that such incidents are all too common, especially when one is in the public eye.

Dennis Schröder himself has not remained silent on the matter. He stated that racism has no place in the sport and that he cannot accept it. He further added that monkey noises are a step too far and do not belong in the sport.

The German Basketball Federation (DBB) reported that a total of two people were ejected from the hall during the game. However, the specific nature of the racist abuse against Schröder has not been disclosed.

Ellen Schröder believes that the culprits should have been raised better by their parents, expressing her dismay at the lack of basic human decency displayed by the offenders.

Despite the unfortunate incident, the focus remains on the game itself, with Schröder's team emerging victorious. The team will continue their EuroBasket journey, hoping to maintain their performance and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship.
