Unified Environmental Movement in Kazakhstan Boasts Over 10 Million Participants Nationwide

Kazakhstan, a vast Central Asian nation, generates over 4.5 million tons of municipal waste annually, with a recycling rate of 25.8% in 2024. This figure, however, is not static as the Taza Kazakhstan initiative is working tirelessly to change the narrative.

Launched with the aim of cultivating new social ethics and shaping a nation-wide culture of environmental responsibility, Taza Kazakhstan has made significant strides since its inception. Over 859,000 hectares of land have been cleaned, a testament to the collective efforts of the campaign's volunteers.

The campaign has seen an impressive participation of over 586,000 volunteers, who have been actively involved in various activities. These efforts have led to the collection of over 1.6 million tons of waste since the start of the campaign.

Taza Kazakhstan is not just about cleaning up, but also about encouraging recycling. The campaign is expanding waste management efforts, introducing eco-boxes and reverse vending machines in major cities. Citizens are offered bonuses for returning plastic and aluminum waste, providing an incentive for responsible lifestyles.

The Taza Kazakhstan campaign is closely linked with the implementation of the 2024 Presidential state-of-the-nation address. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev himself is participating in the campaign in 2024.

In addition to waste management, the campaign has also focused on environmental awareness, ecological education, and ensuring wide information coverage of environmental problems. Over 1.3 billion seedlings have been planted as part of the campaign, including 48.7 million saxaul on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea. A new forest nursery in Kazalinsk with a capacity of three million seedlings annually has also been launched.

The campaign has also seen the adoption of the Taza Kazakhstan concept by the Parliament of Kazakhstan for expanding environmental awareness for the period 2024–2029. Various campaigns such as Taza kasip - taza aimak, Kieli meken, Taza olke, and Moldir bulak are part of the Taza Kazakhstan campaign.

Citizens can report local ecological problems through the @TazaQazBot telegram bot, with over 16,500 requests received and more than 15,000 resolved since the beginning of the year. Most reports concern waste removal, street cleaning, and landscaping.

As of now, the Taza Kazakhstan campaign has united over 10.4 million people across Kazakhstan. The campaign is not just a movement, but a collective effort towards a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future for Kazakhstan.
