Unions Join Forces for Peace: Cyprus' Greek and Turkish Communities Celebrate International Union Action Day
Labour Unions Call for Peace and Reunification in Cyprus
On Monday, September 1, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the Cyprus Trade Union Confederation (SEK) hosted a symbolic and dynamic event in the buffer zone, calling for the reunification of Cyprus, peace, and an end to wars. The event was part of the Global Day of Trade Union Action for Peace.
The joint declaration issued by the labour unions condemned the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people and denounced imperialist wars. Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot workers participated in the event, demonstrating a shared desire for peace and unity.
The labour unions reaffirmed their commitment to the resumption of negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem. They emphasized that any negotiations should be based on the Guterres Framework, with the aim of achieving a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
The unions also expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people and demanded an end to the violence. They aim for a demilitarized and independent state for all Cypriots, rejecting any involvement of Cyprus in military operations and its transformation into a NATO outpost.
The event, held at the Home for Cooperation, included a cultural program featuring artists Koullis Theodorou and Umut Albayrak. The program was followed by the reading of a joint declaration and the conclusion of the event with participants renewing their commitment to common struggles under the slogan: "Peace in Cyprus, Peace in our Region, Peace in the World!"
Earlier in the day, the organizers delivered a resolution to the European Commission Representation in Cyprus. The event marked a significant step towards promoting peace and unity in Cyprus and the region.
