Uniper inks deal for hydrogen storage examination at UK facility

In a move towards digital initiatives and sustainable energy solutions, German utility Uniper has signed a feasibility development agreement with British Salt for the potential development of a salt cavern hydrogen storage facility near Warmingham, Cheshire, in the UK.

The proposed facility could store up to 400GWh of hydrogen across 13 caverns, making it a significant step towards the UK's goal of achieving a hydrogen economy. British Salt, the owner of the mineral rights, has existing operations on the site, providing a strategic advantage for the project.

Under the agreement, Uniper will have sole rights to explore the site's potential for hydrogen storage. The agreement also involves the development of designs for the drilling of the first two wells suitable for hydrogen storage caverns.
