University city of Marburg marked in September 2025

In the historic University City of Marburg, a series of significant events are scheduled for the coming week, each marking a unique occasion for reflection and celebration.

On Tuesday, September 23, the town hall will be flagged in honour of World Bi Visibility Day, a day that has been celebrated annually since 1999 to highlight bisexuality as an independent sexual orientation. This flagging will take place from 7 am until sunset.

The following day, on Wednesday, September 24, the town hall will be flagged once more, this time in memory of the victims of flight, expulsion, and deportation.

On Sunday, September 21, the Day of the Homeland will be observed, a day that was first celebrated in 1950. The Day of the Homeland was initiated by expellees gathering in Stuttgart and presenting the Charter of the Expellees.

But the week's events are not limited to commemoration. On September 1, World Peace Day, also known as "Antikriegstag", will be observed in Marburg from 7 am until sunset. The University City of Marburg will hoist the municipal flag on the town hall to draw attention to the significance of the memorial day.

World Peace Day goes back to the November Revolution of 1918/19, when pacifist peace organizations called for mass rallies to remember the horrors of World War I. It was originally observed on August 1, but was later moved to September 1, the start of World War II.

In addition to these historical observances, the week also includes more contemporary events. On September 20, the town hall will be flagged for World Children's Day. UNICEF Germany and the German Children's Aid Organization are organizing a nationwide participation action for World Children's Day, inviting children and young people in Marburg to submit their demands and ideas on children's rights as part of the action.

Moreover, an organization is planning to create a monument for democracy in Berlin on World Children's Day in 2025. However, the exact organization responsible for this action in Marburg is not yet clearly identified.

World Bi Visibility Day, the Day of the Homeland, World Peace Day, World Children's Day - each of these occasions offers a unique opportunity for reflection, remembrance, and celebration. In Marburg, these events serve as a testament to the city's rich history and its commitment to promoting understanding, peace, and the rights of all its citizens.
