Unlawful Activity Investigation: requests for information on the identity of an unidentified individual, suspected of committing a fraud involving a hurried money transfer, who was last seen in Herzberg carrying a yellow plastic bag

In the quiet town of Herzberg, an 85-year-old man fell victim to a shocking incident on August 12, 2025. The man, a resident of the district of Göttingen, received a call from an unknown woman claiming to be an employee of a court. She deceived the elderly man into believing that a close relative had been involved in a serious traffic accident resulting in a death.

The woman, who is still at large, demanded a large sum of money to avoid the alleged consequences of the accident. Later that same evening, an unknown man appeared at the victim's apartment in the northern part of Herzberg. He was estimated to be around 35 years old, of European appearance, and approximately 170 to 175 centimeters tall. He had short brown hair and no further details about his clothing are known.

The man received a yellow plastic bag containing a five-figure sum of cash from the elderly victim. After the handover, he presumably left in the direction of Lonauer Straße. The investigation into this fraudulent call incident continues, and anyone with information about the described man is asked to contact the police.

Witnesses who observed anything suspicious in the area of Berliner Straße, Sensburger Straße, or Breslauer Straße around 18:30 on August 12, 2025, are also asked to contact the police in Herzberg.

Perpetrators often use old first names and short telephone numbers to target older people in fraudulent schemes. The Police Inspectorate Göttingen recommends that senior citizens change or delete their entries in public telephone directories to reduce the risk of fraudulent calls. Requests for changes or deletions can be obtained at prevention actions, police stations, or via the homepage of the PI Göttingen.

The investigation continues, and it has been revealed that the perpetrators announced another contact attempt for August 15, 2025, to obtain another large sum of cash. However, thanks to the timely involvement of relatives and the police, no further handover took place.

For further inquiries, you can contact the Police Inspectorate Göttingen at Otto-Hahn-Straße 23, 37077 Göttingen, telephone: 0551/491-2032, email: [email protected].
