Investigations into illegal gambling in the German state of Bavaria have reached a record high in 2021, according to figures released by the state government in response to a parliamentary question by the Greens. Last year, 1,185 cases were registered, marking a significant leap from the 762 cases recorded in 2020.

This surge in cases continues a trend that began in 2018, when only 77 investigations were reported. The Green faction has called for decisive action, advocating for increased resources for investigative authorities, expanded prevention and education programs, and enhanced cooperation among public order offices, police, and prosecution services.

Tim Pargent, spokesperson for finance for the parliamentary Greens, commented on the escalating issue, stating, "Illegal gambling is no longer a marginal phenomenon... The state government could have acted long ago." He accused inadequate resources within municipalities and prosecution authorities as fostering an environment for organized crime and exploitation to thrive.

Pargent urged the CSU and Free Voters to take immediate action, emphasizing the need for consistent controls, sufficient deployment forces, and comprehensive prevention and education initiatives. "Young people, addicts, and those at risk of addiction must be effectively protected," he stressed, and noted that the rise in illegal gambling is a nationwide trend, not isolated to Bavaria.

While Bavaria is not alone in this surge in illegal gambling cases, it remains unclear what specific strategies Alliance 90/The Greens are proposing to address the issue. Generally, the Greens advocate for strong consumer protection and regulation in various sectors, suggesting they might advocate for stricter gambling regulations, environmental and social impact assessments, and public health initiatives related to gambling.

Public awareness campaigns focusing on the risks associated with illegal betting and the importance of using licensed operators might also be crucial in deterring illegal gambling.
