Unlicensed Polish driver meets tragic end during police pursuit
In an incident that unfolded on August 29th, 2025, a 21-year-old man from Reinbek found himself in a high-speed chase with the police in the District of Herzogtum Lauenburg. The incident, which took place in Geesthacht/Müssen, has since been the subject of a joint investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office Lübeck and the Police Directorate Ratzeburg.
The man, a German national, was driving a gray Audi and was known to the police. According to reports, he was not in possession of a valid driver's license and was followed by the police on federal highway 5 in the direction of Lauenburg. The man, in an attempt to evade the authorities, drove at excessive speed and illegally overtook several vehicles, endangering bystanders during the chase.
The police deployed a "Stop Stick" on the road, which caused the man's tires to deflate. However, the man crashed into the ditch shortly after driving over the "Stop Stick" and attempted to flee on foot. During the foot chase, the suspect sustained several injuries and was treated in the hospital. Two police officers also sustained minor injuries during the incident.
The suspect was arrested on a meadow and, due to his physical resistance, pepper spray was used against him during the arrest. The officers also ordered a blood test as part of the investigation, suspecting that the driver might have consumed intoxicating substances before driving.
The car was seized on order of the Public Prosecutor's Office Lübeck. The man now faces charges for various traffic offenses, violations, resistance against, and assault on law enforcement officers.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Witnesses to the incident are being sought, and anyone with relevant information is asked to report it to the Geesthacht or Schwarzenbek police stations. Contact details for the Geesthacht police station are 04152/80030 and [email protected], while the Schwarzenbek police station can be reached at 04151/88940 and [email protected].
