The global energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with renewable energy sources, particularly solar power combined with battery storage, rapidly expanding capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

In 2024, renewables accounted for a record 92.5% of global electricity capacity additions, with solar power alone contributing 452 gigawatts (GW) — over three-quarters of the renewable additions. This shift towards cleaner energy sources has been driven by several factors, including the cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits of renewables.

Bill McKibben, a renowned environmentalist, believes the fossil fuel industry is scared due to an unprecedented threat, as renewable energy has become the cheapest form of energy. He emphasises that solar power is beautiful because it cannot be hoarded, unlike fossil fuels, and it is difficult to imagine wars over solar power.

Battery storage technologies are critical for addressing the intermittency of solar and wind power. Although challenges remain in scaling up storage due to resource availability and environmental concerns, batteries and emerging technologies like green hydrogen (produced by splitting water using excess renewable energy) offer promising solutions for balancing supply and demand across time and sectors.

Several countries have successfully implemented large-scale solar and storage solutions. For instance, Brazil has expanded its solar capacity beyond 35 GW, leveraging its high solar irradiance and distributed generation policies that allow rooftops to feed excess power back into the grid. Similarly, the UK has over 40% of its electricity coming from renewables, supported by offshore wind, solar power, and government policies that provide price guarantees encouraging investments.

The advantages of solar and battery storage over fossil fuels include faster and cheaper installation, continued cost declines making renewables economically competitive or superior to gas and nuclear power, zero emissions during operation, flexibility through storage and hybrid systems, and support for the electrification of transportation.

In the United States, the momentum towards clean energy continues unabated. In the first half of 2022, the US added 22,332 megawatts of power plant capacity, with the majority being utility-scale solar, batteries, and onshore wind. California is producing a significant amount of electricity from renewable sources, and is using 40% less natural gas to generate electricity compared to two years ago.

Recent developments in the US include Utah passing a bill supporting balcony solar systems, allowing homeowners and renters to generate their own clean power. This move received unanimous bipartisan support in the legislature and was signed into law by the state's Republican governor.

However, challenges remain. The Environmental Protection Agency is working to overturn the "endangerment finding," a foundation for federal climate regulations since 2009. The OBBB, passed by Congress, is seen as a slowdown rather than a reversal of the momentum towards clean energy.

Despite these challenges, the train for renewable energy has left the station and is picking up speed. Companies like Energy Dome have announced major new contracts to use compressed carbon dioxide technology to power Google data centers worldwide. In the US, the US Department of Energy now states that more carbon dioxide is beneficial for the planet, albeit in certain industrial processes.

Looking forward, the US energy landscape is expected to have a similar mix of new power plants through 2030, with solar and batteries leading the way. Polar Night, a remote Arctic community, is using sand batteries to provide reliable electricity during winter nights.

In conclusion, renewable energy with solar and battery storage is solidifying its role as the fastest growing and increasingly dominant source of global power generation, offering significant economic, environmental, and social benefits over fossil fuels. However, scaling suitable energy storage and grid adaptation remains essential to fully realize its potential as the leading electricity source worldwide.
