Unveiled Evidence of Juvenile Prostitution in Kenya's Maai Mahiu, Revealing a Grim Truth

In the Kenyan town of Maai Mahiu, nestled in the Rift Valley and serving as a significant transport hub, an investigation by BBC Africa Eye has shed light on a disturbing reality: the thriving sex trade has become a breeding ground for child sexual exploitation.

Over several months, two undercover journalists infiltrated this local sex trade, documenting their interactions with local women, known as "madams," who facilitated the exploitation of minors. The evidence presented in the investigation was submitted to Kenyan authorities in March, but no arrests have been made related to the documented activities.

One woman, identified as Nyambura, stated that it's easy to manipulate children by handing them sweets. Another madam, Cheptoo, revealed that her earnings from selling young girls could reach 2,500 Kenyan shillings ($19) per transaction. Footage captured during the investigation showed women discussing their awareness of the illegal nature of their activities while providing access to young girls for clients.

The town's notoriety for its sex trade is alarming, with some of the minors involved being as young as 13 years old. One victim shared an experience of being forced to do "unimaginable things" by clients. In interviews, child victims described daily abuse and being forced to service multiple clients.

The Kenyan authorities, including the local police and national security agencies, have been informed about the incidents in Maai Mahiu. However, securing convictions for child prostitution and related crimes is infrequent in Kenya. Many vulnerable minors are too frightened to come forward in court, hindering potential prosecutions.

Stakeholders and advocates highlight the urgent need for systemic change and enforcement of existing laws to protect vulnerable children from child prostitution. A spokesperson for the police stated they could not trace the individuals captured in the footage.

However, there is hope. "Baby Girl," a former sex worker, provides refuge for young girls escaping similar fates and offers education on the risks of sexual exploitation. The conversation around proper support and rehabilitation for survivors remains crucial in the fight against child prostitution in Kenya.

The findings of the investigation underscore the urgent need for a multi-faceted approach to address and ultimately eliminate child exploitation in regions like Maai Mahiu. The region where Maai Mahiu is located is noted for high rates of HIV infection, making the need for action even more pressing. As the fight against child prostitution continues, the resilience and courage of survivors like "Baby Girl" serve as a reminder of the progress that can be made when we come together to support and protect the most vulnerable members of our society.
