Unveiled: The Country Ranked as the Most Peaceful in the World for 2025 - Taking a Look at India's Position Revealed

The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025, compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), has been released, providing a comprehensive assessment of peacefulness across the globe. The index ranks 163 independent states and territories, representing 99.7% of the global population.

Iceland tops the list as the most peaceful country in the world, achieving the highest rankings in all three areas of the GPI. The reasons for Iceland's top ranking include lower crime rates, strong social trust, and the absence of an army. Iceland is followed by a group of countries that include Ireland, New Zealand, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Portugal, Denmark, and Slovenia.

However, the overall global outlook is concerning as the world has become less peaceful on average according to the GPI report. The fall in peace is attributed to growing internal conflicts, a surge in militarisation, and geopolitical divide. Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East continue to remain among the least peaceful places.

India, with a rank of 115 out of 163 countries, has shown some improvement in peace levels compared to the previous year. India's GPI score is 2.229, indicating a 0.58% improvement. The specific year in which India changed its position in the GPI is not explicitly mentioned in the search results, but recent updates available for the year 2025 highlight ongoing conflicts like the Kashmir dispute and nuclear tensions as notable factors in India's peace and security context.

South America is the only region that has shown improvements in peacefulness according to the 2025 GPI. Argentina and Peru are among the countries in South America making remarkable gains in peacefulness. South Africa, on the other hand, records a notable decline in peace.

The bottom of the index ranking features Russia, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Yemen. These countries face significant challenges in terms of societal security and safety, ongoing domestic or international disputes, and militarisation.

The GPI assesses peace across these three parameters, providing valuable insights into the state of peace around the world. As we strive for a more peaceful world, these findings serve as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done.
