Unveiling the Report from Our Wellness Site: 150 Individuals Donning Bathing Suits in London's Debut Contrast Therapy Sauna Facility
In the heart of London's Canary Wharf, a new wellness spot has emerged, aiming to redefine the concept of wellness in an accessible and community-focused manner. This is Arc, the UK's largest communal sauna, and it's more than just a place to sweat it out.
Arc, with its warm terracotta palette and low lighting, offers a unique experience. The therapy here involves cycling between a hot sauna and cold water, a practice known as contrast therapy. This thermal bathing concept, usually rooted outdoors in the UK, finds a new home indoors at Arc.
But Arc is not just about physical well-being. Emphasising the importance of being fit rather than looking fit, Emlyn Brown, SVP of Accor wellbeing, strategy, design, and development, explains, "We're not just about physical fitness, but mental and emotional well-being as well."
Alana Kit, co-founder of Arc, shares the same vision. She emphasises the importance of community and creating a welcoming space. "We want people to feel comfortable enough to come on their own and meet like-minded people with an interest in wellness," she says.
Entering Arc's ice baths in newly acquainted pairs is encouraged, fostering a sense of camaraderie. The therapy sessions are not just about personal wellness, but also about connecting with others.
Arc offers wellness workshops and Arc After Dark social evenings featuring DJs and soundscapes, further emphasising its commitment to community and social engagement.
In a move away from complex wellness regimens, a recent report published by the hospitality group Accor identifies a trend towards nature and more accessible practices such as sauna sessions and open water swimming.
Similar to Arc, FIX, another wellness spot, offers a large communal lounge area for chatting and rehydrating. Founded by James Fielding, who practiced contrast therapy for an extended period in Bali, FIX provides guided sessions in breathwork, sound healing, meditation, and stretching. According to Fielding, "People enjoy the social aspect the most."
In November, FIX in Manchester opened its doors with a 40-person sauna and two ice baths. The US trailblazer Remedy Place is set to follow suit, opening a 10,000 sq ft site in Boston, its largest yet.
Arc, under the leadership of Reid Hoffman, is planning to open a second site in Marylebone later this year. With its focus on community, wellness, and accessibility, Arc is set to continue its mission of redefining wellness in the UK.
