Unexpected Union of Spahn and Miersch in Ukraine Unveiled - Unxpected Union of Spahn and Miersch in Ukraine Unveiled
In an unprecedented move, the leaders of Germany's CDU/CSU (Jens Spahn) and SPD (Matthias Miersch) have embarked on a joint solidarity visit to Ukraine. This visit, the first of its kind, is a clear demonstration of unity within the black-red coalition and a strong message of support for Ukraine.
Upon arrival, Spahn and Miersch visited German soldiers in Rzeszów, Poland, who are protecting an airport that serves as the most important hub for supplying Ukraine with Western weapons. The airport, approximately 60 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, is a crucial frontline in the ongoing conflict.
Spahn and Miersch's visit comes amidst a surge in air strikes on Ukraine, including Kyiv, following the Russia-USA summit in Alaska. Two cruise missiles hit a house in Kyiv's city center, affecting nearby buildings such as the European Union’s representation and the British cultural institute, the British Council. A residential building on the eastern outskirts of Kyiv was also severely damaged by a rocket, resulting in more than 20 deaths.
In light of these escalating tensions, Spahn has stated unequivocally that Putin is the one who wants war and does not want peace. However, the current position of the German federal government remains cautious and open-ended regarding the deployment of German troops in Ukraine. Chancellor Merz has left the possibility open but emphasized that any such deployment would require parliamentary approval and careful negotiation. The Defense Ministry is engaged in discussions, including about potential training missions, but has not changed its stance that training on German soil is simpler and safer than in Ukraine.
Spahn believes that the Ukrainian army should be equipped as best as possible, and any debate beyond that is premature. Miersch, too, has stated, "We rule nothing out" regarding the possible deployment of German troops. The Bundestag, Germany's federal parliament, plays a crucial role in supporting Ukraine, as it approves budget funds for Ukraine's support and would have the final say on sending German soldiers if a ceasefire were to be agreed upon.
During their visit, Spahn and Miersch will hold talks on further German support for Ukraine and diplomatic efforts to end the war. After their joint retreat last week, both leaders have expressed optimism about their ability to work together effectively. This visit is not only a demonstration of solidarity but also a step towards finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
