Upcoming revisions to the international football schedule could surprise Premier League spectators
The football calendar is set for a significant shake-up, as FIFA has agreed to a permanent change in the men's international match calendar. This change will see the introduction of a double international window to each season, causing a stir among clubs and some supporters.
Starting from September 1, 2021, and running until September 9, the September international match window will offer a maximum of two matches per team. This window will be followed by another in November, with the two-game window remaining unchanged.
The first international break of the 2026-27 season will occur between September 21 and October 6, 2026. Each national team will play up to four fixtures during this break. The second week of October will see another international match window.
England, one of the participating nations, will face Andorra and Serbia during this September window. The penultimate men's international window of 2025 will run from October 6 to October 14, while the last match window of 2025 will run from November 10 to November 18.
The change in the calendar is not without controversy. Some of its advocates dislike the September match window, while others express concern about the potential impact on club football. Introducing a double international window to each season may cause consternation for clubs, as it could lead to a congested fixture list.
International football is a divisive matter among Premier League supporters. Some players may have played as many national team games as club fixtures by the end of the September match window. Ending each season with a pair of internationals in June can leave the impression that there's a lot of international football.
However, FIFA remains committed to this change, with the agreement in place until at least 2030. The first international break month for the 2026-27 season is from September 1, 2026, to September 30, 2026.
This window will offer a maximum of two matches per team, as the football calendar undergoes a significant transformation.
