England, currently ranked 8th in the ICC men's ODI team rankings, are set to face South Africa in a three-match series starting on September 2. The hosts, who last played in June, clean-swept West Indies 3-0, will be looking to build on their recent form.

The series, scheduled to take place at Headingley, Lord's, and Southampton, comes at an important juncture for both teams. South Africa, currently in 6th place with a rating of 98, is on a 2-1 ODI series win in Australia.

The record between England and South Africa in ODI cricket is close, with England winning 30 matches and South Africa winning 35, with five no-results and a tie. The last meeting between the two sides was a Champions Trophy group match in March, which South Africa won by seven wickets.

The current captain of the England cricket team for the 2025 ODI series against South Africa is Jos Buttler. In the last series against South Africa, Harry Brook was the full-time white-ball captain.

Interestingly, a fast-bowling debutant has been named for the first South Africa ODI, while Jofra Archer is set to return for the series. No further information has been provided about Archer's return or the identity of the fast-bowling debutant.

India tops the ICC men's ODI team rankings with a rating of 124, followed closely by New Zealand in 2nd place with a rating of 109. Sri Lanka is ranked 4th with a rating of 103, while Pakistan is in 5th place with a rating of 100.

The last automatic qualification spot for the 2027 World Cup is currently occupied by the West Indies. Zimbabwe, as the hosts, is assured a place in the World Cup due to being the hosts. Ireland is ranked 12th with a rating of 52, while Afghanistan is ranked 7th with a rating of 91.

Bangladesh, ranked 10th, risks missing out on direct qualification for the World Cup. The ODIs between England and South Africa will be crucial for both teams as they aim to secure their place in the 2027 World Cup.
