Updated Report on April 2025 US Labor Market: Fresh Certification, Fresh Doubts

In the ever-changing world of work, the class of 2025 is preparing to enter a job market that is both competitive and dynamic. Recent data reveals some trends that could shape the employment landscape for new graduates.

Firstly, the gap between the unemployment rate of young graduates and the broader population of bachelor's degree holders has become more volatile in recent years, with the gap widening on average. However, it's worth noting that the unemployment rate of young graduates with a bachelor's degree between the ages of 25-34 is lower than the overall unemployment rate across the entire labor force.

The job market offers a mix of opportunities and challenges. For instance, sectors such as food service, driving, sanitation, and personal care and home health require less than one year of experience in a majority of job postings. These sectors may not always align with graduates' long-term career goals but can serve as valuable opportunities to build a work history.

On the other hand, civil engineering jobs continue to be in higher demand than they were prior to the pandemic. The level of job postings in the legal sector is also higher than pre-pandemic levels. Besides the healthcare sector, companies and industries offering an exceptionally high number of full-time positions for new graduates currently include university and research institutions, technological and engineering fields, public services, IT and telecommunications, and construction and engineering firms.

The demand for management roles, including project management, remains strong. Furthermore, the pharmacy segment has the highest share of internship postings. However, it's important to note that the unemployment rate for new graduates remains low, and marketing and civil engineering follow closely in terms of internship postings.

Navigating this current job market requires persistence, adaptability, and an understanding that it is anything but predictable. As the job market evolves, it's crucial for new graduates to be ready to adapt to shifting opportunities while facing the reality of a tighter, more competitive job market.

It's also worth mentioning that the level of overall job postings is higher than pre-pandemic levels in 57% of sectors, with 27% of those sectors being in healthcare-related industries. Internship postings, however, are 11 percentage points below the same date in 2024 and are below the levels of April 3, 2019, according to recent data.

In conclusion, the job market presents both challenges and opportunities for the class of 2025. By staying adaptable, persistent, and informed, new graduates can navigate this dynamic landscape and find success in their careers.
