Updated travel guidelines for power banks: Essential info for travellers to be aware of today
In light of safety concerns related to lithium battery risks such as overheating and fire, several airlines have implemented stricter rules regarding powerbanks on airplanes.
The Federal Aviation Administration allows lithium-metal batteries with a maximum lithium content of two grams, up to eight grams with airline approval. For lithium-ion batteries, the limit is 100 watt-hours (Wh), up to 160 Wh with airline approval.
Starting October 1, Emirates, along with Lufthansa and other airlines, will enforce guidelines for transporting powerbanks in carry-on luggage. According to these new regulations, passengers can only bring powerbanks with a capacity of up to 100 Wh on airplanes. The powerbanks must remain unused during the flight, meaning no charging devices or charging the powerbank itself. They must be carried in hand luggage but not in checked baggage and kept within reach under the seat or in the seat pocket.
A passenger can carry a maximum of two powerbanks in their carry-on luggage, depending on the airline. However, it's best to check the airline's website beforehand, as regulations can vary. Powerbanks are not allowed in checked baggage.
To calculate watt-hours of a powerbank, divide the milliamperes by 1,000 to get the ampere-hours (Ah), then multiply by the voltage. For instance, a powerbank with a capacity of 20,000 mAh and a voltage of 5 V would have a capacity of 100 Wh (20,000 mAh รท 1,000 = 20 Ah, and 20 Ah ร 5 V = 100 Wh).
Alternatively, the contacts of powerbanks can be covered with insulating tape to prevent any potential accidents. It's essential to adhere to these guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable flight.
A fire on a Busan Air plane in late January is still suspected to have been caused by a powerbank in the overhead bin, emphasizing the importance of adhering to powerbank guidelines. So, before your next flight, take a moment to check your airline's website for specific powerbank regulations and pack accordingly.
