US Fisheries Division seeks innovative strategies to enhance the American seafood sector

In an effort to address the challenges facing the U.S. seafood industry, NOAA Fisheries has invited public comments on the "effort to revitalize" the sector. This move comes in response to the executive order titled "Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness," which was signed by President Joe Biden in April 2021.

The executive order calls for the adoption of "less expensive and more reliable technologies" in the seafood industry, aiming to boost competitiveness and sustainability. However, the order does not provide specific details on the technologies it refers to.

Eugenio Piñeiro Soler, assistant administrator of NOAA Fisheries, stated that the agency aims to address the decline in fisheries landings and revenues, which are attributed to challenges from foreign competition and changing ocean conditions.

Interestingly, the executive order follows a similar request for ideas issued by the Trump administration during its first term. The Trump administration is seeking new ideas to boost the U.S. seafood industry, with a particular focus on regulations that "overly burden" the sector.

However, the order does not specify which regulations are under consideration for elimination. It simply targets regulations that hinder the growth and competitiveness of the U.S. seafood industry.

In conclusion, NOAA Fisheries is taking steps to revitalize the U.S. seafood sector through the implementation of the President's Executive Order. The order aims to address the decline in fisheries landings and revenues by encouraging the adoption of less expensive and more reliable technologies and reviewing regulations that overly burden the industry. Public comments are invited to contribute to this important initiative.
