US inmate Genaro García Luna complaints about alleged excessive imprisonment conditions
In a troubling turn of events, Genaro García Luna, the former Secretary of Public Security of Mexico, is currently imprisoned in the United States and facing allegations of harsh and inhumane prison conditions.
García Luna, who has lost a total of 14 kilos before imprisonment and an additional 18 kilos (32 pounds) since, has been deprived of basic necessities. He has not been given the opportunity to shower, shave, or even eat with utensils.
The legal team of García Luna has expressed concern over the conditions, stating that their client has only been allowed to communicate with them once, and only for three hours in eight months. Furthermore, they have not been granted access to any of the legal materials since December 2024, more than seven months ago, when García Luna was taken from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The lawyers' document also points out that the denial of access to legal materials has created excessive and extreme difficulties for the legal team, preventing the completion of the opening brief for Genaro García Luna's appeal. The lawyers desire to have an active and substantial role in the formation and presentation of his appeal arguments, a role that has been hindered by the current conditions.
The document further accuses that García Luna has only been given one pair of underwear and has been forced to eat without utensils. These allegations, if true, would constitute a severe breach of human rights and prison protocols.
García Luna's legal team has requested the opportunity to communicate with the federal prosecutors assigned to his case, but they have not received a response. The lawyers have also denounced that their client is suffering from excessive and extreme conditions within prison.
It is important to note that Genaro García Luna actively participated and collaborated with the authorities during his trial. The lawyers' document recalls that he actively participated in his own defense during the trial.
The lawyers' document concludes by requesting improvements in Genaro García Luna's prison conditions and access to his legal materials. The ongoing situation raises serious questions about the treatment of prisoners in the United States and the importance of upholding human rights even in the most challenging circumstances.
