US Open Tennis: Pegula Advances to Semifinals, Sabalenka Earns Walkover

In the ongoing US Open Tennis Championships, Jessica Pegula has made history by reaching the semifinals for the second consecutive year without dropping a set. This remarkable feat was last achieved by Serena Williams from 2011 to 2014.

Pegula's impressive run continued as she eliminated Barbora Krejčíková in the quarterfinals, winning 6-3, 6-3. Her opponent in the semifinals will be Aryna Sabalenka, who advanced after Markeéta Vondrousová had to withdraw due to an injured knee.

Vondrousová, who entered the tournament ranked 60th and unseeded, had impressed many with her performance, including a three-set victory over Elena Rybakina. Sabalenka expressed her sympathy for Vondrousová on social media, wishing her a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, the women's quarterfinals are set for Wednesday. No. 2 Iga Świątek will face No. 8 Amanda Anisimova, and No. 11 Karolína Muchová will take on No. 23 Naomi Osaka. Osaka, who claimed her fourth major trophy at the 2021 Australian Open, last appeared in a grand slam quarterfinal at the same tournament earlier this year.

The men's quarterfinal between Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz started at 8 p.m., after the conclusion of Sabalenka vs. Vondrousová. This is a rematch of last year's championship match at Flushing Meadows, where Djokovic emerged victorious.

Interestingly, this is the first walkover in the quarterfinals or later at the US Open since 1988. The last female player to receive a walkover in a US Open semifinal in the last 36 years was Martina Navratilova.

As the tournament progresses, fans are eagerly awaiting the semifinal match between Pegula and Sabalenka, a rematch of last year's championship match at Flushing Meadows. Pegula, playing as an American, will be aiming to continue her winning streak and secure a place in the final.
