US Open's Sixth Day
U.S. Open Tennis: Day Five Recap
The U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York continued with some exciting matches on day five. Here's a roundup of the key events.
Novak Djokovic, the seventh seed and Serbian, took a step closer to his 25th Grand Slam title and fifth U.S. Open crown by beating Briton Cameron Norrie. Djokovic now has more wins at a hardcourt Grand Slam than Roger Federer, with 192 wins.
American sixth seed Ben Shelton faced an unfortunate setback as he retired injured against unseeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, with the pair locked at two sets all. Mannarino will next face Czech Jiri Lehecka in the U.S. Open.
Czech Jiri Lehecka's path to the fourth round was paved by Mannarino's injury, but he will have to overcome Mannarino himself to advance further.
Taylor Townsend, an American, stunned Russian fifth seed Mirra Andreeva to reach the last 16 of the U.S. Open for the second time. Townsend's victory marks a significant milestone in her career.
Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish second seed and 2022 champion, beat Luciano Darderi from Italy 6-2 6-4 6-0. Alcaraz's impressive performance sets him up for a potential clash with Djokovic in the later stages of the tournament.
Jessica Pegula, the fourth seed from the United States, defeated Victoria Azarenka, a two-time Grand Slam champion, 6-1 7-5. Pegula's victory sets up an intriguing match against Belarusian top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round.
Sabalenka continued her title defense at the U.S. Open by beating Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Sabalenka's victory sets her up for a potential clash with Pegula.
Elena Rybakina, the ninth seed and the 2022 Wimbledon champion, defeated 2021 U.S. Open winner Emma Raducanu 6-1 6-2. Rybakina's victory sets her up for a potentially thrilling match against German Laura Siegemund in the fourth round.
Siegemund, the last remaining German player in the women's singles at that stage, will compete against Vondrousova. Marketa Vondrousova, a Czech player, knocked out seventh seed Jasmine Paolini from Italy 7-6(4) 6-1.
Play has begun under partly cloudy skies in New York, with the temperature around 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit). The Order of Play for Friday includes matches on Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. Specifically, four matches are scheduled: Pegula vs Azarenka, Alcaraz vs Darderi, Rybakin vs Raducanu, and Shelton vs Mannarino.
Meanwhile, German Jan-Lennard Struff knocked out American 17th seed Frances Tiafoe to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open. Taylor Fritz, the fourth seed and last year's runner-up at the U.S. Open, moved past Swiss Jerome Kym to continue his hunt for a first Grand Slam title.
