Users' mobile device usage skyrockets in bathroom settings

In the past, individuals would ponder deep thoughts in the bathroom. Nowadays, collecting 'likes' surpasses pondering thoughts, and even while on the toilet, a preferred digital companion is often not absent.

In a recent survey conducted by YouGov and dpa, it was found that over 80% of Germans aged 25 to 34 use their smartphones while on the toilet. This study sheds light on the various activities Germans engage in while using their mobile devices during this private moment.

One of the most popular activities is browsing social networks like Instagram or TikTok, with 53% of respondents admitting to doing so. Other common activities include checking the weather (27%), watching videos (33%), and reading messages (35%).

Interestingly, the proportion of users who read a book, newspaper, or comic on the toilet is lower than the proportion who scroll on their phones. Only 9% of all respondents still opt for traditional reading materials.

Phone calls are less common, with every tenth respondent making calls while on the toilet. A smaller percentage (4%) check what's happening in dating apps during this time.

Singling or humming to oneself is a less common activity compared to scrolling, reading, or listening to the radio. Only two out of a hundred people engage in this behaviour, especially younger ones.

Listening to the radio is another less common activity, with 5% of users tuning in while on the toilet.

A significant number of adults also use the time on the toilet to check what's happening in the world (36%). However, only about one in eight (12 percent) users think or plan their day on the toilet.

The survey revealed that on average, 54% of adults in Germany use their smartphones while on the toilet, with men using it more (58%) than women (49%). Almost half of users (48 percent) were surprised by how quickly time flies when on their phone on the toilet.

It's worth noting that the survey was commissioned by the news agency dpa and conducted by Yougov. The findings provide an insightful look into the habits of Germans regarding smartphone use during toilet visits.
