New Postmaster General for USPS Announced

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced that David Steiner will take over as the 76th Postmaster General, effective July of this year. The selection of Steiner was made by the White House, as required by law, following a thorough search process conducted by the Postal Service's board of governors.

Steiner, a seasoned executive, has served in various positions at Waste Management and was a partner at the law firm Phelps Dunbar. He is also a current board member of FedEx. Steiner will succeed Louis DeJoy, who took over the USPS leadership in July 2025, and was previously CEO of Waste Management and a board member at FedEx.

President Trump and his administration are reported to have pushed for Steiner's hire. Trump can nominate individuals for the four vacant slots on the USPS board, including Anthony Lomangino, another executive in waste management, who has been named to serve in one of the open positions.

The news of Steiner's appointment has been met with optimism from advocacy groups. Former Rep. Kevin Yoder, who leads the advocacy group Keep US Posted, expressed optimism that Steiner's leadership will strengthen the Postal Service's mission of delivering reliable, affordable mail services to every American, every day.

However, not everyone is pleased with the appointment. Donald Matson, president of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, expressed readiness to work with Steiner but also expressed concerns about his business ties with FedEx, a large and aggressively non-union competitor of USPS.

The USPS declared a loss of $3.3 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 2025, more than doubling its losses from the same period in the previous year. Factoring only the parts of its finances that management considers within its own control, USPS lost $848 million in the quarter, also more than double the same quarter of fiscal 2024.

Despite the financial challenges, Steiner has committed to maintaining the independence of the U.S. Postal Service. He will be taking over at a time when Americans, according to a poll commissioned by the American Postal Workers Union, overwhelmingly oppose privatizing USPS by a 60% to 26% margin, with the splits largely holding for all demographics and regions.

In the interim, Doug Tulino is currently the acting USPS chief. The Postal Service's board of governors hired an outside firm to conduct a search for a new Postmaster General, and Steiner was selected from the three finalists identified by the board.

As Steiner prepares to take over his new role, he will face the task of steering the USPS through its financial challenges while maintaining its commitment to delivering mail services to every American, every day.
