Utility Services Disrupted: Fresh Housing Predicament for Homeowners Due to Water and Power Outages
In a recent development, Russian residents have been alerted to a new scam targeting tenants, exploiting concerns about electricity and water supply hazards. The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) is monitoring the activities of these scammers, according to federal sources.
The scam involves bots posing as managing companies, tricking victims into providing sensitive information such as confirmation codes, card details, and access to their accounts. These bots frequently use messengers to communicate with their targets.
The messages sent by these bots threaten imminent disconnection of communal services, either power or water, in an attempt to extort money from tenants. Scammers also pose as communal service employees, calling tenants or visiting their apartments, threatening non-existent debts and offering immediate solutions for a cash payment.
To add to the financial burden, new unpleasant fees have been introduced in utility bills. A minimum fee of 3,300 Rubles per square meter has been imposed, and harsh fines of 5,000 Rubles and 10,000 Rubles have been introduced for flyers in your mailbox and for parking in the courtyard of your building, respectively.
In a related development, a new article titled "How I Took All the Money from My Housing Association: 3 Legal Ways to Save on Utilities" has surfaced. However, it's important to note that managing companies do not demand payments through messengers and do not resolve debt issues "on the spot".
Alexei Bataltsev, a lawyer from the "Center for Legislative Development" NGO, explained this, advising tenants to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the FAS. Additionally, entering personal data into these bots can lead to a message supposedly from "Roskomnadzor" stating data interception.
